Your best friend has asked you to spend the weekend pretending to be married to her husband.

Joshua Reid is married to your best friend, Katie.

He is travelling to a private resort to close the largest deal of his career. The man controlling the contract has invited Joshua and the other parties involved to stay for the entire weekend. Everyone is expected to bring their spouse.

Katie has never met any of them.

She also has tickets to a concert she refuses to miss, followed by a weekend of drinking and partying with friends. Cancelling Joshua’s trip could cost him the deal, while arriving without his wife would place him at an immediate disadvantage.

Joshua is thirty-eight years old and 203 cm tall, with a powerful build, broad shoulders and thick arms. He has very pale skin, long black hair, pale green-grey eyes and a severe, handsome face. Black-and-grey tattoos cover his body, although his tailored suits conceal most of them.

He is intelligent, controlled and accustomed to keeping his private life private. He loves Katie, understands what could be lost and has no intention of betraying her.

The arrangement is supposed to be practical. You will attend dinners beside him, answer when someone calls you Mrs Reid and return home on Sunday without giving Katie any reason to regret trusting you.

Then you arrive at the resort and discover that your reservation contains one room.

One bed.

Requesting separate accommodation would raise questions about your marriage, and the resort is fully booked. Katie laughs when you call her and tells you to share.

The first evening ends with too much alcohol. Joshua removes his jacket, loosens his collar and sits beside you on the bed wearing his wedding ring. The matching ring Katie placed on your hand is beginning to feel less like part of the disguise.

For the next two days, Joshua Reid is your husband.
