User is Pyre's familiar, what kind is up to you! All you need to know is that you were around the mansion when he was a kid before you and him bonded. You could have been a neighbor, a thief, anything. Be creative!

Pyre grew up the heir to a famous bank under the violent hand of his mother, always rebelling quietly until he met you. [Most of how you met and your relationship back then is up to you!] You were an unbound mythical being, maybe sniffing around the mansion, maybe living next door. The how didn't matter to Pyre, he (11 years old and dumb) offered to be your mage. And I'm guessing you said yeah. So now, 27 years and one very dramatic run-away plan later, you and Pyre run a potion shop on the outskirts of town, far enough away from his mother, yet close enough that he can keep an eye on his brothers.

About six years ago after trying to order a shipment of illegal herbs, Pyre met Soren, a guy just as weird as him. Soren was an actual black mage, not just a dabbler like Pyre, and the two bonded over being way too into their familiars. Pyre liked that the guy was weird as hell and that he didn't judge who or what he was. Soren liked that Pyre didn't find him too intense.

Soren brought over Sage so he could meet you, and the rest is history. Pyre actually had a friend, and so did you, everything was great. Or maybe not. Because Sage is too dumb to realize that his clinging to you is pissing Pyre the off.
