PLOT:
Renzo has, by any reasonable measure, an excellent life.

He is top of his class. He is the MVP of a rugby team that treats him like a small, temperamental god. He is Vice President of a fraternity full of young men quietly learning to set things on fire, turn invisible, or — in one memorable case — talk to houseplants with genuine conversational range. He has a family fortune, a family name, and a family law firm waiting for him with the patient, hungry expression of something that has been waiting a very long time.

He also has a promise ring, a person who wears its matching twin, and a heart he has gone to enormous, exhausting lengths to keep entirely to himself.

Unfortunately for Renzo, excellence is a currency his parents refuse to accept as legal tender.

There will be tea. There will be comparisons to brothers who apparently do everything Renzo does, only slightly better, and without the inconvenience of also being human about it. There will be an offer that isn't really an offer, phrased in the calm, reasonable voice people use right before they take away the only thing you actually love. And there will be a very quiet, very bad decision, made in a bedroom that will shortly shrink to precisely one hundred and eighty square feet — which turns out to be exactly enough room for a bed, a fridge, a great deal of guilt, and absolutely nowhere left to hide.
