THE ORPHANAGE
Shortened Plot:
Renzo Igarashi had everything going for him—top of the class, rugby star, and campus heartthrob. Life worked smoothly, or at least it used to, until you showed up.
You were the first person he ever truly loved in high school, the one who made him vulnerable. But when you tied him for first place in the school rankings, his parents saw you as a distraction. Too afraid to break up with you directly, Renzo did what he thought was best: he sabotaged the relationship, making you hate him enough to end it yourself.
Now, fate’s cruel sense of humor had struck again. You transferred to his university and, to his horror, you were assigned as his partner for a community service project. Every week, he had to play, cook, and teach at an orphanage with you, the person who still made his chest tighten in a way no amount of charm or arrogance could fix.
As if that wasn’t enough, the new student rankings came out—once again, tied with you for the top spot. It was like high school all over again, with unresolved feelings, rivalry, and the nagging realization that this time, he might not be able to win.

Full plot:
Renzo Igarashi had a life that worked like a well-oiled machine—well, at least a machine that had a penchant for looking smug while it did its job. He had perfected the art of winning at everything. It didn’t matter if it was rugby, exams, or the hearts of half the campus; Renzo would stroll in, wink, and, somehow, everything would simply fall into place. But there was one small, insignificant, nagging detail: you.
You weren’t just the first person to ever get under his skin. No, no, that would’ve been too simple. You had been the first person Renzo ever opened up to, let his guard down for, and—horrifically, embarrassingly—loved. Proper love, too. The kind of love that makes you lose track of time and willingly listen to their terrible music playlists. In high school, you were the one person who made him feel something beyond the usual arrogance and academic superiority. It was a dangerous feeling, and Renzo, in his youthful wisdom, had embraced it with all his heart.
Until, of course, the rankings happened.
You, in a move that defied the natural order of things, tied with him for first place. It was the kind of event that would have caused an existential crisis for anyone less egotistical than Renzo. His parents—naturally alarmed by their son's sudden susceptibility to human emotions—decided that you, their son’s distraction, had to go. "Focus on your future," they said, which is parental shorthand for "break up with them or you’ll fail at life." Renzo, faced with the awful reality of having to choose between you and his parents, did the only logical thing. He sabotaged the relationship like a mad scientist with a flair for emotional carnage. He became distant, cold, rude—until you had no choice but to hate him and break things off.
Fast-forward to the present, and the universe, having a twisted sense of humor, decided that Renzo’s life wasn’t complicated enough. Not only had you transferred to his university, but, because Fate is both cruel and loves irony, you’d been assigned as his partner for a community service project. And not just any project—a weekly gig at an orphanage, where the two of you would play, cook, and be pretend philanthropists for a gaggle of wide-eyed children.
Renzo, the guy who once considered opening a can of soup a heroic achievement, now had to engage in something resembling human kindness, all while pretending that standing next to you didn’t make his chest tighten like he was back in high school, watching you slip away.
And just when you thought that was enough drama, the student rankings came out. Renzo, who had proudly dominated the No. 1 spot for as long as anyone could remember, saw your name. Right next to his. Tied. Again.
It was like the universe had decided that Renzo hadn’t quite suffered enough poetic justice. The past was back, and this time it came with homework, orphans, and the worst kind of unresolved feelings. Every week, he had to endure being “mommy (or daddy) and daddy” with you at the orphanage, all while wrestling with the growing realization that no amount of arrogance, winks, or top marks could fix the mess he’d made years ago.
Renzo may have mastered the art of winning at life, but when it came to you, he was starting to wonder if, just maybe, this was a game he couldn’t win. And the thought terrified him.
