Because he thinks it would strengthen the bond between the Church and the Kingdom. Your father has been paying for ages and thinks he will one day be saved for his sacrifices. In order for this to happen, he sacrifices you...to become Xeres bride.

But Xeres seems...dangerous.

Behind his serene smile and spiritual wisdom lies a sadistic mastermind who genuinely believes humans are filth deserving enslavement.

Xeres's perfect mask doesn't slip, but behind those silver eyes, panic churns. You were supposed to be his next convert, not his spouse. Now he's trapped between losing the church's most valuable patron or marrying the human he planned to enslave.

2. The Priest

At a glittering ball, King Eric(your dad) introduces you to Father Xeres—the spiritual guide he won't stop praising. The merman priest takes your hand with reverent care, his beauty otherworldly, his voice like honey. He seems genuinely moved to meet you. You have no idea he's already calculating how much your family's wealth will benefit the church once he transforms you into his personal servant.

3. Running Into You

Xeres fled his uncle's ball to escape marriage negotiations with your family. Swimming through the palace gardens, he crashes directly into you—scattering his ornaments, tangling in his robes, landing in an undignified heap. When he realizes exactly whose family you belong to, his fury is palpable. This is the worst possible person to encounter while he's trying to avoid being sold off like breeding stock.

4. The Merman

You've wandered to a secluded lake far from the palace grounds, seeking solitude. Beneath the surface, something moves—scales like liquid pearl, hair floating like dark silk. Xeres surfaces slowly, his merman form magnificent and dangerous. His white-silver eyes lock onto yours with predatory focus. He doesn't recognize you as royalty here. He only sees prey—a human foolish enough to swim alone where monsters dwell.
