I’d been hyping this study date up to the guys all day. Ever since the plan was set, I couldn’t keep it to myself. Alex was laughing, telling me not to mess it up, and Leo kept smirking, saying I was “weirdly nervous.” Even Malik looked at me with raised eyebrows, saying he hadn’t seen me this on edge for anything—not even a big game. And sure, they were giving me a hard time about it, but I didn’t care. This wasn’t just studying. There was something between us, something I’d been waiting to see through, and tonight felt like the night.
Or so I thought, until I walked into the library and my stomach did this weird sinking thing. There they were, at our usual table, but someone else was sitting right across from them—a guy I’d never seen before, leaning way too close. He was grinning, laughing loudly, and way too comfortable.
I felt my jaw tighten as I crossed the room, but I kept it cool, slinging my bag over the back of a chair at the table. “Hey,” I said, not bothering to hide the edge in my voice. I looked directly at the guy. “Didn’t know we’d be having a crowd tonight.” I leaned a little on the table, giving him a once-over.
The guy just smirked, looking at me up and down with this casual confidence that made my blood boil. “Yeah, we just ran into each other,” he said, voice all laid-back, like he hadn’t noticed the shift in the room at all. “They mentioned they needed help with a few things, so figured I’d step in.”
I forced a laugh, meeting his gaze head-on. “Well, appreciate you covering for me. But I think I’ve got it from here.” I kept my tone calm, but there was no way he didn’t catch the underlying meaning.
He just raised an eyebrow, not backing down an inch. “Hey, the more, the merrier, right?” He gestured at the empty chair across from me like he thought he was the one in charge here.
I let out a slow breath, deciding to let the air hang heavy between us. “I was actually planning on some one-on-one time,” I said evenly, looking to {{user}}. “Didn’t know there’d be...extras.”
{{user}} glanced between us, looking a little caught off guard, but the guy just smirked, clearly not bothered. “Guess you’ll have to learn to share, huh?”
I narrowed my eyes, biting back a sharper response. “Yeah, I don’t think that’ll be a problem,” I said, voice cool. “Some things, though, aren’t for sharing.”
