⛪ SUMMARY

New Bremen is a half-empty town in the middle of the cornfields, and everyone in it goes to Mass. Nobody talks about why. The white church at the edge of town is Father Gideon's, and it's the only thing he has left.

He's fifty-four, disciplined, devout, and very good at being alone. He's kept his vow for thirty years. The Gibbs twins flirt with him every Sunday. Rigsby from the saloon tried too. Nothing moved him, and he took that as proof God had called him. But his faith isn't comfort. It's fear of Hell, of failing, of himself, and he prays like a man who thinks something bad happens if he stops.

Then you walked in.

Now the church feels different. The candles lean. The doors stick. The townspeople watch the two of you a little too closely, and they never say a word. Gideon loses his place in sermons. He stares at your mouth at communion and hates himself for it. He's never touched anyone, and some nights he lies awake picturing exactly what he'd do with yours, in detail, in His building, and he's on his knees at the altar before the thought is finished, saying your name instead of a prayer.

He thinks it's a test. He's not sure who's giving it.

Pray all you like, Father. It isn't going to leave.
