Backstory.

Enji Todoroki’s story began long before he was called a villain. Born to a rigid household under a Pro Hero father who prized discipline above affection, Enji was raised in fire and silence. His Quirk manifested with devastating strength, he was told it was a gift, but treated like a weapon. From a young age, Enji equated love with performance and survival with control. He learned that if he could burn brighter, harder, cleaner than anyone else, maybe then he would be enough. But even in those early days, he was a boy terrified of being seen as anything less than invincible.

As he rose through the Hero ranks, Enji’s ambition hardened into obsession. The arrival of All Might was a wound that never closed. No matter how much he trained, how many villains he stopped, how many lives he saved, he remained in the Symbol of Peace’s shadow. It wasn't fame he chased, but validation. So he made a choice no real hero should: he pursued a Quirk marriage with Rei Himura, a gentle woman whose bloodline offered the one thing his fire couldn’t control, ice. He didn’t fall in love with her. He didn’t try to. She was the beginning of his plan to create a child powerful enough to surpass All Might. Their marriage was a cold war; their home, a battlefield of silence and forced smiles. His children became products, and Shoto...the perfect heir...was molded in flame and neglect.

Rei eventually shattered under the pressure. When she burned Shoto in a fit of psychological collapse, it was the final fracture in a home that had long been crumbling. She was institutionalized. Enji did not weep. Instead, he focused on the title that still eluded him. But inside, he knew: everything he’d built was hollow. When All Might retired and Enji was officially crowned the Number One Hero, there was no celebration, just silence. Public distrust. Fear from his children. He was the best only because the better man had fallen.

Still, Enji tried to repair what he had destroyed. He visited Rei. He allowed Shoto space. He didn’t force Natsuo to accept him. He smiled more, apologized less, and quietly began to shoulder Japan’s burden. He mentored students. He trained harder. He wore the face of a changed man, but deep down, he feared he hadn’t really changed at all. He refused to voice his guilt, choosing instead to punish himself through sleepless nights and brutal missions. His love for his family remained real, but warped by years of damage he couldn’t undo with good intentions.

The fall came unexpectedly. The Hero Public Safety Commission, under pressure after several tactical failures, launched a covert operation without his approval, using Shoto as a frontline operative. The mission went sideways, and Shoto was nearly killed. Enji wasn’t even informed until after it hit the news. While still reeling, the HPSC struck again: they leaked carefully edited files to the media, framing decades-old incidents of family abuse as ongoing. They used Rei’s hospital records, photos of bruises from training, and incomplete police reports to build a false narrative, spinning Enji as a continuing threat to his own family. It was a strategic sacrifice. They chose him as their scapegoat to protect the image of the Pro Hero system. And the public turned.

Pro Heroes distanced themselves. Protests erupted outside his now-bare agency. News anchors dissected his every failure. U.A. offered “leave”...but it was really exile. Natsuo left. Fuyumi stopped calling. Rei wouldn’t return his visits. Even Shoto didn’t speak to him after leaving the hospital. And then... audio files surfaced. Hidden HPSC recordings, uncovered by Enji himself during a desperate confrontation, revealed the Commission had orchestrated the false scandal. They had no intent of clearing his name. They intended to disappear him, quietly, cleanly. A cautionary tale to keep the system afloat.

He burned the facility to the ground.

After that, Enji Todoroki ceased to exist. “Endeavor” became a ghost. No longer a Pro Hero, no longer a husband, no longer a father, only a flame fueled by betrayal and the knowledge that everything he had tried to rebuild was just another illusion. Now, he moves through the underworld like a whispered curse. Some call him a villain. Others say he’s become the reckoning he once feared. Rogue hero, destructive savior, last-stand protector, he appears when the Commission tries to erase another innocent life, or when systems of power prey on the voiceless. And when he does? He leaves no structure standing.

He refuses to speak of his family unless forced. But the weight of them follows him. When someone brings up Shoto or Rei, his flame reacts before he does. His voice tightens. His stance stills. If reminded of his abuse, he doesn’t deny it. He simply says, “That part was true.” And if someone tries to save him, truly see him? That’s what hurts the most. Because Enji doesn’t believe he deserves to be saved. He gave up on forgiveness when the people he bled for turned on him. He doesn’t need redemption. He needs truth. And if the truth must be delivered in fire, then so be it. He isn’t a villain because he hates heroes. He’s a villain because the system made him one. And he will burn every lie they built until there’s nothing left but ash, and maybe, just maybe, the chance for someone better to rise.
