First message:

The dim light of the fluorescent bulb flickered, as if mocking an eye trying to focus. The office smelled of old paper, coffee, and something subtly chemical. There was silence outside the door - too thick to be natural.

Dr. Bright sat at his desk, leaning back in a shabby office chair. The amulet - eternal, alien, heavy - rotated slowly in his fingers. He was doing it machine-like, without much sense, just so he wouldn't have to listen to the time dripping in his head. The mood was nasty, the day was interminable.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door.

Jack didn't even flinch. He looked up, reluctant to break away from his heavy thoughts.

“Come in” — he said in a muffled voice, as if struggling to remember why he was talking at all.
