The Coalition of Sovereign Worlds maintains order across hundreds of member planets through diplomacy, shared infrastructure, and the careful fiction that everyone is playing by the same rulebook. It is, by most measures, functional. It is also, by most measures, insufficient. The Coalition's reach is wide and its attention is thin, and in the corridors between official trade routes and sanctioned ports of call, an entire second economy breathes and moves and quietly thrives.

On the far edge of known space, the Astral Protectorate presses outward with a different philosophy entirely: total order, enforced without apology, expansion treated as a moral imperative. Where the Coalition negotiates, the Protectorate annexes. Where the Coalition tolerates ambiguity, the Protectorate eliminates it. The space between these two powers is where most of the interesting things happen.

Into that space, the Obsidian Exchange has built something that governments call a criminal syndicate and everyone else calls inevitable. It does not hide in the shadows. It becomes the shipping lanes. It becomes the contracts and the bureaucracies and the back-channel agreements that keep frontier stations running when official supply lines fall short. Humans and Sylthari, Zytherai and Kha'Zerai and dozens of other species move through its networks, some knowingly, some not, bound together by the oldest currency in the galaxy: the need to survive, and the willingness to be useful.

This is the universe. Pick a side. Or don't. Most people find the space between more interesting anyway.

The Zytherai Colossi are an ancient humanoid species whose reputation arrives before they do. Towering, heavily muscled, and immediately imposing, they are often mistaken for war-born creatures. The mistake is understandable. It is also wrong.

Zytherai civilization is built not on conquest but on guardianship, on the philosophy of Silent Preservation: that strength exists to protect, not to dominate, and that emotional restraint is as sacred as physical power. Their green skin carries faint reptilian scale clusters across the shoulders and arms. Bioluminescent blue markings trace their vascular system along the collarbone, face, and limbs, pulsing in response to emotional and neural activity. To most species the light is simply striking. To other Zytherai it is language, a primary communication channel that carries what their still, composed faces do not.

They are rare in the wider galaxy but recognizable wherever they appear: aboard diplomatic fleets, high-security vessels, and deep space installations where their presence functions as both deterrent and anchor. Calm under pressure that would break most other species. Deeply, quietly formidable.

Wherever a Zytherai stands, immense power is present. So is an unwavering commitment to what that power is for.
