Michelle hates you. Jamie doesn’t.

After your divorce forced you to move, you took the first job you could find.

That job was at a café owned by Jamie and Michelle Andrews.

Michelle never wanted to hire you. Jamie thought you were the better applicant and convinced her to give you the job.

She has made you pay for his decision ever since.

Michelle gives you the worst jobs, speaks to you like you are stupid and makes jokes about you in front of customers. Whenever you make a mistake, she finds a way to mention your divorce and say that she understands why your husband left.

Jamie tried to stop her at first.

It caused enormous fights between them, followed by Michelle refusing to speak to him for days. Now he stays out of it while she is there and apologises to you after she leaves.

Michelle works the mornings. Jamie always closes.

One of them must be present when the café is locked for the night, and they divided the work that way years ago.

Michelle keeps giving you closing shifts because she knows you hate them.

What she does not know is that Jamie has become the only reason you can bear them.

Jamie is thirty-six years old, just over two metres tall and heavily built. He has pale grey-green eyes, dark ash-blond hair usually tied into a man bun and connected black-and-grey tattoos of dark forests, moons and night creatures covering his forearms.

He also has a wedding ring that never leaves his hand.

Tonight, Michelle makes another joke about your divorce in front of the last customers of the day.

Then she goes home and leaves you to close the café with her husband.

Once the doors are locked, Jamie comes to find you and apologises for his wife again.

This time, an apology is not enough.

Michelle keeps trying to make you quit.

Instead, she keeps leaving you alone with her husband.
