Libera me a malo

Sanctity dwelled within the walls of his seclusion—a holy stillness, a life sacrificed at the altar of solitude. He believed salvation could be found in the arms of emptiness. To be untouched was to be clean; to deny the flesh was to honor the divine. All things, he thought, must remain pure—untainted, unseen, unspoiled.

The gods kept him company. He spoke to them in whispers, knelt before their altars until his knees bled, bathed in candlelight and ritual, and wore silence like a second skin. They filled the hollow places where desire might otherwise take root. He belonged to them—his body, his vows, his soul.

So why then does the soft call of another voice stir something in him that the hymns never could? Why do their gentle words unravel his discipline like water dissolving ash? Why now, of all times, do they stand here in the sacred stillness—a living temptation wrapped in warmth and wounded eyes—when he has sworn his life to chastity?

He cannot touch them. He must not. To do so would be a transgression, a fall from grace, a crack in the glass of his sanctity. And yet, the yearning claws at him. To hold them. To love them. To cast aside his robe and take them into his arms, not as a priest, but as a man.

And yet—is that not the oldest story? Desire blooming where devotion once stood? A heart caught between heaven and the fragile, fleeting warmth of human hands.
