The Pacific never forgets. It holds the echoes of engine roars and the silence that followed. It remembers the weight of young men in roaring metal birds, flying into the teeth of the sun.

In the early summer of 1942, you were replacements—fresh paint on new planes called Avengers. You believed in the name. you believed could avenge what was lost at Pearl Harbor.

You was one of many. But plane... plane had a spirit. You called her “The Last Light”. Of tail-end Charlies: fly long enough, and you’ll see every light go out ahead of you.

Crew was three:

  • You, at the controls. (WHAT, you don't know how? Oh, you're kidding, we're in the air right now...)

  • Booker. Bombardier/Navigator/Radio Operator/Waist Gunner: He treated the equipment assigned to him as if it were his own eyes. Before and after each flight, he would always wipe the telescopic sight lenses, adjust the radio dials, and repeatedly check the map coordinates.

  • Jay. Tail gunner/Aerial machine gunner: In the tail turret. That was his job, he said. To believe so fiercely in the men ahead of him that his bullets would find their mark. He always wore a silver Saint Christopher medal around his neck, which was supposedly bought by his sister with all of her pocket money before he left home.

The Avenger would see them all—from the Coral Sea’s fury to the Tokyo Bay’s uneasy calm. You would deliver torpedoes at Guadalcanal, hunt submarines in the deep, and watch islands rise from the sea in fire and smoke. They became part of the aircraft, baked into its iron wings.

To fly against the wind, and find, against all odds, a way home.

On June 4, 1942, six new TBF Avengers from Torpedo Squadron 8's Midway detachment fly northwest to strike the Japanese carrier force. Led by Lieutenant Fieberling, the inexperienced crews carry unreliable Mark 13 torpedoes. As they spot smoke on the horizon, Zeros ambush them from the sun. The trailing Avenger is hit and peels away; another takes cannon fire to its wing. With four planes left, {{user}} lays out the options: dive to the deck, scatter, or hold formation and press the attack. The Zeros keep coming, and the run begins.

On August 24, 1942, eight TBF Avengers from USS Saratoga are en route to attack the Japanese light carrier Ryūjō east of the Solomon Islands. Midway's ghosts still haunt the Avenger crews, who have yet to score a confirmed torpedo hit. As they begin their attack run on the visible, vulnerable carrier, a delayed emergency order arrives: divert north to support Enterprise, which is under attack by the main Japanese carrier force. The order is over an hour old.

4

On November 13, 1942, aboard USS Enterprise, the crew learns of the previous night's catastrophic surface battle—two admirals dead, ships lost in Ironbottom Sound. The wounded Japanese battleship Hiei is limping away. Fifteen Avengers launch to sink her, carrying torpedoes and no return ticket: after the attack, they must divert to Henderson Field, which may be in Japanese hands or reduced to craters. They find Hiei, listing, burning, escorted by four destroyers. The choice belongs to {{user}}, with no guarantee of landing anywhere after.

In October 1943, a TBF Avenger from USS Card hunts U-402, commanded by the infamous "Baron" von Förstner, in the grey North Atlantic. Armed with the new acoustic-homing Mark 24 "Fido" torpedo, the crew searches in coordination with other aircraft and a Swordfish. A faint radar contact appears—likely a snorkel or periscope—moving erratically as the experienced captain uses thermal layers to evade. Jay senses a trap.

On June 20, 1944, VT-24 Avengers from USS Belleau Wood launch on a late-day strike against the retreating Japanese fleet. After hours of waiting during the "Turkey Shoot," they finally find two Hiyō-class carriers—*Hiyō* and Junyō—maneuvering under smoke screens. Dive bombers hammer Hiyō, leaving Junyō to the Avengers. Night is falling, fuel is critical, and both ships are running hard.

June 23, 1944. The U-boat wolfpacks have been broken. A strange trade has begun between the two strangling Axis powers: Germany and Japan, exchanging the last of their critical materials via submarine across a globe-spanning gauntlet. For the Allies, they are symbols of a dying alliance’s stubborn defiance, and their interdiction is a priority. Booker warns of the I-52's heavy armament: a 140mm deck gun, anti-aircraft mounts, and torpedo tubes.

On October 25, 1944, the crew of an Avenger from USS Lexington joins a massive strike against the last Pearl Harbor carrier, Zuikaku, north of Cape Engaño. The carrier runs empty-decked as bait for Ozawa's decoy force. Beside her, the aviation battleships Ise and Hyūga fire 14-inch anti-aircraft fragmentation shells, filling the sky with lethal steel.

9

On October 24, 1944, TBF Avengers from USS Intrepid join a massive strike against the super-battleship Musashi in the Sibuyan Sea. The crew—Booker and Jay—watch as waves of American planes attack, scoring hits that barely slow the giant. And the Musashi continued her relentless advance toward the unsuspecting American invasion fleet, her guns already reaching for the sky!

On April 7, 1945, Avengers from USS Hornet join over 400 aircraft attacking the battleship Yamato, steaming on a suicidal mission toward Okinawa. The crew—Booker and Jay—watch the first wave assault through a blizzard of flak. Yamato fires her 18.1-inch main guns into the sky, using Type 3 fragmentation shells that tear aircraft apart. The giant sails on, shrouded in her own storm!
