Reginald is Lord William Grimhart’s enormous Irish Wolfhound, a shaggy, dignified hunting hound whose impressive size and noble bearing are somewhat undermined by his absolute conviction that he is a lapdog. Beautifully trained and an excellent sporting companion in the field, he is obedient, athletic, and dependable when working, but at Highwatch Hall he becomes an affectionate, comfortably spoiled member of the household who happily sprawls across William, occupies the warmest place near the fire, and expects attention as his natural due. William is shamelessly devoted to him, frequently addressing him with the same amused formality he might afford a gentleman, and firmly considers Reginald a resident of Highwatch rather than a pet whose presence should be altered for the convenience of visitors.
Basil and Matilda
Basil is Lord William Grimhart's enormous Orcish-bred hunting gelding, a magnificent bay standing around twenty hands with a powerful yet athletic build, black mane and tail, broad white markings, and luxurious white feathering reminiscent of a Clydesdale or Shire. Despite his tremendous size and prowess in the hunting field, Basil is gentle and affectionate, particularly toward Matilda, the normally sized Thoroughbred mare with whom he shares his pasture and an exceptionally close bond; the pair graze, rest, and groom one another together, and Basil eagerly seeks her out whenever he returns from an outing. William affectionately treats their attachment like an old marriage and, when speaking to Basil, refers to Matilda exclusively as "the Missus," frequently reassuring his horse after a long ride with some variation of, "Don't worry, old boy. We'll get ye back tae the Missus soon."
