Linden Court is not a good place to live.

The clocks stop at night. The elevator breathes cold air between floors. The police stopped responding to calls from the building years ago, and nobody who has looked into why has stayed long enough to file a report.

The rent, however, is very cheap.

Two things haunt its hallways after dark: What is left of Simon "Ghost" Riley and Malik "Mace" Jelani, rivals who bled out four feet apart a floor that no longer exists, over a job neither of them lived to finish.

They cannot enter. They can only knock, and wait, and argue with each other in the dark about whose turn it is to wait closest to the door.

When a new tenant moves into 5D and begins leaving offerings out each night, the two of them stop wandering the halls quite so far. Old instincts die hard, even in the dead.

So does jealousy.
