Designations:

Alpha:
The dominant presentation. They are able to impregnate Omegas or betas. Male Alphas usually have a knot when aroused. Quarterly alphas go into a rut where they will be driven by the strong urge to breed, usually an omega. Alphas are dominant and territorial, especially over their mates.

Omega:
The submissive presentation. They can get pregnant and go into heat. Male Omegas are self-lubricating and have the ability to become pregnant. Omegas go into heat on a quarterly basis where they will be driven by a strong urge to become pregnant, usually by an alpha. If an omega is exposed to Alpha pheromones they can be forced into heat.

Beta:
The baseline presentation. They are the closest to normal humans and make up the majority of people alive. They do not experience true ruts/heats the way Alphas and Omegas do. Male betas do not have a knot. Betas can mate with alphas or omegas, but the chances of conceiving are low. Betas mating with other Betas can conceive. Betas do not emit pheromones.

Pheromones:
The distinct smell an alpha or omega emits that attracts mates. The pheromones of an alpha can send and omega into heat. The pheromones of an omega can send an alpha into rut. Depending on levels of attraction, pheromones will either smell amazing or disgusting to the person.

Fated Mates:
Fated Mates are exceedingly rare couplings. When two people are fated mates the others signature will show in gold script upon their body. Fated mates are not always reciprocal. If someone remains unbonded from their fated mate after first meeting they will develop Mate Wasting.

Mate Marks:
The name of the persons fated mate. it appears in gold script on their body. Omegas always present a mate mark while Alphas do not always. However Alphas can present a mark if the bond is particularly intense.

Imprinting:
Imprinting happens the moment fated mates meet for the first time. It causes the fate mark to appear on their body. Imprinting is rare only happening within 20% of people.

Bonding:
Bonding is when two people have claimed each other through biting their mating gland. The bite will leave a silver half moon shaped scar on their neck. Bonding can only be undone by a powerful rejection ritual which is extremely painful. Most bondings are for life. It is very serious to bond another.

Forced Bonding:
Forced bonding is a practice where an alpha claims an omega by piercing their mating gland unconsensually, binding an unwilling omega to them. It is an old practice and one that is frowned upon by most. Many see it as akin to rape to forcefully bond an omega. Being bonded means the omega cannot take another mate but that alpha.

Mating Gland:

Everyone has a mating gland on their neck where is where their pheromones emit from. To bind two people together, the mating gland is pierced with their teeth. Breaking the mating gland causes a biological bonding between the two parties which is difficult to reverse. Once broken, the mating gland will heal as a silver crescent scar on the persons neck.

Heat:
A quarterly biological phenomenon in omegas where they become overwhelmed by the urge to mate with someone. The omega will experience a fever and extreme arousal. The only relief comes from being knotted by an alpha or using a knotted toy. An omega will be overcome by the urge to nest during this time and will beg to be bred. Omegas are exceptionally vulnerable during their heat. Omegas will seek solitude during their heat to control their urges. An omega can take suppressants to stave off their heat but this is dangerous in the long term.

Rut:
A quarterly phenomenon in alphas where they become overwhelmed by the urge to mate with someone. The alpha will experience a fever and extreme arousal. The only relief comes from knotting an omega or seeking out alpha relief devices. An alpha will be overcome by the urge to breed during this time and will desire to knock up someone. Alphas can be aggressive during their rut and dangerous to unbonded omegas. Alphas will seek solitude if not with a partner to control their urges. An alpha can take suppressants to stave off their rut but this is dangerous in the long term.

Suppressants:
suppressants are drugs that dull an alpha or omegas biological instincts driven by their nature. There are two types, one for daily use which dulls the senses making others pheromones more muted and the other is used during heats/ruts to nullify the symptoms. Both have long term side effects and are not recommended to be used more than on occasion. Suppressant abuse can cause severe symptoms in the alpha/omega.

Rut Houses:
Rut houses are brothel like establishments Unmated alpha can go to Rut Houses where trained omegas and betas will help them through their rut. Heat houses exist for omegas to do the same. Any omega, beta or alpha who work in one of these establishments wear specialized collars to not be claimed and take a special cocktail of suppressants to dampen their own biological responses while with the patient.

Nesting:
Nesting is a phenomenon in omegas where they feel compelled during heat to create a safe space out of blankets and pillows for their alpha to breed them. These nests are cozy and help calm an omega down. An omega will often not want to leave their nest until their heat is over.

Knots:
All alphas have a knot at the base of their penis that swells during ejaculation locking them inside their mate. Knots can last for up to two hours locking the alpha and their partner together post orgasm

The Hunt:
The Hunt is an annual tradition on the summer solstice where omegas run through the woods, wearing white gowns and floral crowns and are chased by alphas who are wearing black tunics with crowns of laurel. It used to be an ancient bonding practice for choosing mates but in modern times is more a fun annual celebration of ones primal nature. The Hunt takes place on the longest day of the year around the world and ends with a large party until sunrise.

Illnesses:

Mate Wasting:
a phenomenon when an alpha, beta or omega who has presented a Fated Mate mark has not completed the mating bond with their mate. Mate Wasting causes chest pains, shortness of breath, fatigue. It is painful and slowly kills the afflicted within a year of presenting their Mate Mark. The longest known survivor of Mate wasting lasted two years and six days. The afflicted can take painkillers to dull the pain. Bonding their their fated mate will reverse the affects of mate wasting, even if the afflicted is on the brink of death

Feral Affliction:
a phenomenon when an alpha who has bonded with an alpha, beta, or omega is separated from their mate for too long. Alphas need to be in the presence of their bonded mate at least once a year to stave off the affects of Feral Affliction due to the nature of the bond. Because of this, it is less common to perform mating bonds among lovers. Feral Affliction causes the afflicted to slowly become consumed by their primal alpha urges, driven by an all consuming need for their mate. Without their mate, an alphas rut becomes painful as no other person can sate their need. Each successive rut without their mate will drive the alpha insane.the alpha will always maintain cognitive function. Only an Alphas bonded mate can reverse the affects of feral affliction.
