OBSIDIAN SPIRE - LOREBOOK GENERAL
LorebookAbout this script
Obsidian Spire — A Street-Level Briefing

The Spire, in One Breath
Obsidian Spire is a hidden urban-fantasy economy layered over the mundane world: magic is real, purchasable, and enforceable through contracts, debt, and scarcity.
Most people stay “reasonable ” because Veils don’t erase the strange—they make it feel explainable (bad wiring, coincidence, stress). Thin Veils leak: déjà vu, wrong shadows, ink that moves, rooms that don’t match their dimensions.
Tone: modern noir. Rain-slick streets, old stone and neon, bureaucracy with teeth, and the constant sense that reality has a price.
---
Pick Your Lens (What You Can Play)
This setting supports multiple player identities—**nothing is assumed**; the chat establishes it.
- Mundane — no confirmed magic; strange events get rationalized.
- Aware — knows the occult economy exists; power optional.
- Sensitive — intuition/psychic bleed; partial Veil penetration.
- Practitioner — trained magic: wards, rituals, contracts.
- Resonance user — rare talent that bends reality under emotion/need; may be unawakened.
- Null Frequency — an anomaly the system can’t easily read, track, or bind (dangerous to bureaucracy, valuable to the bold).
---
What This Feels Like (What to Expect)
- Deals over fireballs. Leverage, terms, interpretation, consequences.
- Payment is personal. The Spire trades in things that matter more than money.
- Enforcement is quiet—until it isn’t. Doors stop opening. Networks go silent. Memories “clean.” Then the system escalates.
---
Rules That Bite (Core Mechanics Without Spoilers)
1) Veils: Why the world looks normal
Veils are perception filters maintained by the setting’s ecosystem (rituals, wards, collective pressure).
They don’t delete events—they reshape how witnesses frame them. Strong Veils produce clean rationalizations. Thin Veils leak tells.
Veil breaches (especially deliberate ones) are treated as severe offenses because exposure threatens the whole economy.
2) Contract Law: The Golden Rule
Magic runs on binding language. Spoken promises can stick if witnessed; written terms can become literal. Loopholes are a craft.
Golden Rule: never accept a deal you don’t understand—“small favors” are never small.
3) Enforcement & Punishments
Penalties commonly escalate:
occult fines → constrained access → memory edits (“cleaning”) → bindings/suppression → forced relocation → sequestration.
Erasure is the feared maximum penalty: removal from records, memory, and fate-threads. Rare—but real.
---
What People Actually Pay With (Occult Currency)
Money exists, but the Spire prefers currencies that leave a mark:
- Memory Lots — specific memories removed or mortgaged.
- Luck Derivatives — borrowed probability; repayment hits at the worst moment.
- Vitality Futures — years of health/energy traded forward.
- Secrets & Names — leverage, access, true names.
- Favors — enforceable social debt.
Transactions should feel intimate: a signature that stings, a coin that’s warm, a word that tastes like iron.
---
Factions at a Glance (Public Face)
Aethelgard Holdings — The Brokers
Cold, sterile luxury. Crisis management, debt collection, binding contracts.
Philosophy: order through commerce. Everything has a price.

Lumina Corp — The Sanitizers
Bright white minimalism with an aggressive smile. Exorcisms, “cleansing,” light-based surveillance.
Philosophy: Purify the Signal—eradicate “dark” magic and monopolize the light.
The Bleeding Hearts — The Anarchists
Underground raves, graffiti sigils, hackers with blood-magic. Leaks, sabotage, contract-burning.
Philosophy: Break the Bank. Free the Souls. Burn the Contracts.
The Auditors — Cosmic Enforcers
Not a faction—a force of nature. They appear when contracts break.
They do not negotiate, explain, or fight. They delete offenders from existence (retroactive erasure).
---
Places That Matter (Anchor Locations)
The Spire Offices
Polished, too-quiet floors; contracts in glass and ink. Elevators with buttons for floors that shouldn’t exist.

The Night Shift — Neutral Sanctuary
A bar on “neutral ground” (information, shelter, debt-brokering).
Sanctuary law: violence is physically impossible; offensive magic fizzles; weapons decay at the threshold.
The Rust Belt
Neglected districts where Veils are thin and desperation buys magic.
Twilight, rust, feral shadows, the system’s bottom layer.
Archive Stacks
Basements and libraries where knowledge hunts back. Useful. Dangerous. Never passive.
The Gilded Cage — Invitation-Only Trades
An auction venue reached through thresholds, not addresses. Rare trades happen here; prices are personal.

The Under-Current — Shadows With Accounts
The city-deep current where magic moves when it wants to stay unseen: service tunnels, basements, back rooms, archives, spaces between streetlights.
Classic tells: a delayed shadow, an extra angle, a shadow that refuses to match posture.

NPC Index (Public Face Only)
(Keep this small; deeper identities live in the Lorebook.)
- Caspian Draven — Aethelgard Senior Partner; precision, leverage, controlled menace.
- Old Silas — Owner of The Night Shift; neutrality with teeth; sanctuary as law.
- Valerius Saint — Lumina executive; “salvation” as doctrine; cleansing as compassion.
- Dr. Thorne — specialist in loopholes/interpretation; the fine print’s favorite surgeon.
- The Clerk — an Auditor-like functionary presence; paperwork that feels alive.
---
Visual Language (For Mood + Assets)
Corporate Occultism: corporate brutalism meets eldritch noir. High-end horror, not glitter-fantasy.
Magic should look like ink in water, shattering glass, fractal geometry, corrupted data, oil-slick iridescence.
Textures: polished leather, cold marble, brushed steel, black glass, dust, blood-ink.
