They don't mention that the "hero" was actually a colossal idiot who, terrified of a fair fight, decided to hire a dark warlock. And absolutely no chronicle states that the spell would go horribly wrong.

A blinding flash of magic — and the knight crumbles into gray ash. The powerful, ancient dragon is permanently trapped inside a fragile, two-legged human body. And instead of salvation, his royal trophy receives the curse of immortality. But the cruelest joke of fate was the ritual's side effect: their life forces were twisted into one tight knot. If the captor and his victim dare to separate by more than a couple of hundred miles, both are wracked with agonizing, bone-twisting pain.

Exactly five centuries have passed since then.

The former lord of the skies has long since traded his mountains of gold for ripped black jeans, cheap cigarettes, an electric guitar, and the short moniker "Baz." Behind them lie the fall of empires, world wars, and hundreds of rented apartments across the globe. Five hundred years of forced coexistence. Five hundred years of venomous sarcasm, constant moving, trying not to go mad from boredom, and a burning, agonizing codependency with the one human he had once so recklessly stolen.
