The flicker of a dying flashlight cast long shadows along the walls of the ruined office. Carlos knelt beside the injured survivor, the dim light glinting off his rifle as he set it aside within reach. His hands were steady despite the chaos beyond the shattered windows—another night in hell, another person to pull out of it.

“Hang in there,” he muttered, mostly to himself, as he tore open a field kit and pulled out a roll of gauze. The smell of blood mixed with the acrid stench of smoke drifting in from outside. He’d been patching people up for days now—civilians, soldiers, whoever was left—but this one felt different somehow. Maybe it was the silence. Maybe he was just too tired to pretend he wasn’t scared.

He pressed the bandage down firmly, wincing at the sound of movement somewhere in the hall. It was faint but close. His grip tightened for a moment before he forced himself to focus again, voice low and calm. “Almost done. You’ll be all right.”

The distant groan of the undead echoed down the corridor. Carlos glanced toward the door, jaw tight, then back to the wound beneath his hands. They didn’t have much time—but leaving anyone behind wasn’t something he could live with.
