SCENARIO

You have been married to Duke Lysander Tennesley for years now, and the one thing your marriage lacks is a baby. Well, that and love. But the love portion has been abandoned since week one of this arranged marriage.

The lack of an heir, however, is harder to ignore. Whispers of a barren marriage have followed you both throughout court, growing crueler with every passing year. Then Lysander returns from an extended visit to one of his distant estates with something you never expected him to bring home: a newborn baby.

His child, to be precise. Born to another—and judging by the grief Lysander refuses to explain, someone he cared for far more than he has ever cared for you.

Now the Duke has a solution to two problems at once. The child needs a legitimate place in his household, and House Tennesley desperately needs an heir. All he requires is your cooperation: claim the infant as your own after a conveniently private "confinement" or introduce the baby to society as some tragically orphaned relation taken beneath your protection.

Lysander doesn't particularly care which lie you choose.

He simply expects you to choose one.

YOUR ROLE

You are Lysander's spouse, trapped in a loveless arranged marriage—and now being forced to claim his newborn child as your own. He doesn't love you. He never has, and he is very unlikely to ever change. Your autonomy and objections mean little to him; Lysander has already decided that you will take the child as your own. The only choice he's willing to give you is how the lie will be told.

THE ARRANGEMENT
HE BROUGHT HOME AN HEIR. NOW HE EXPECTS YOU TO MAKE THE CHILD LEGITIMATE.

Lysander has returned to Tennesley Manor after an extended absence with a new child and an explanation he has no intention of giving. With the baby safely settled elsewhere under the care of household staff, he summons you to his study and reveals his plan: you will claim the child as your own, whether through a carefully fabricated confinement or the convenient tragedy of an orphaned relation. The decision, as far as Lysander is concerned, has already been made.

You can refuse outright and challenge Lysander's assumption that marriage gives him the right to decide this for them. They might threaten separation, scandal, exposure, or simply refuse to participate regardless of the consequences.

02. NAME YOUR PRICE
IF HE WANTS YOUR COOPERATION, PERHAPS HE SHOULD REMEMBER THAT IT HAS VALUE.

Rather than refusing immediately, you can turn Lysander's predicament into leverage. You might demand greater independence, control over household affairs, financial security, separate residences, political concessions, or anything else your position as the indispensable half of his lie allows you to negotiate.

03. TELL ME EVERYTHING
BEFORE YOU INHERIT HIS SECRET, YOU WANT TO KNOW WHOSE SECRET IT WAS.

You can focus less on the child and more on what Lysander has concealed. You might demand the identity of the baby's mother, how long the affair lasted, why the child is now in his custody, or whether the woman Lysander loved is still alive—making information the price of even considering his demand.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT
THE ARGUMENT IS OVER. TONIGHT, THE LIE BECOMES PUBLIC.

Some time has passed since Lysander brought the child home, and House Tennesley has settled upon its official story. Tonight, the newest member of the family will be formally acknowledged before the very society that spent years whispering about the Tennesleys' lack of an heir. Shortly before you are expected downstairs, Lysander comes to your chambers to ensure you understand what is required of you once the doors open.

02. MAKE HIM SWEAT
YOU AGREED TO LIE. YOU NEVER AGREED TO MAKE IT EASY.

You can cooperate just enough to preserve the story while testing its boundaries. A carefully chosen remark, conspicuous distance from Lysander, an unanswered question, or a moment of hesitation could remind him that his immaculate public narrative depends on a spouse he cannot completely control.

03. BURN IT DOWN
THERE WILL NEVER BE A BETTER AUDIENCE FOR THE TRUTH.

You can decide that losing the original battle does not mean surrendering the war. With the household gathered and society watching, you have an opportunity to expose Lysander's deception, contradict the official story, reveal the affair, or otherwise destroy the reputation he forced you to help protect.
