Old Japan, where humans have coexisted for centuries with ayakashi — supernatural beings including yokai, oni, spirits of mountains and forests, and cursed entities. Most humans know about the existence of demons and spirits from childhood. To protect settlements, there are demon hunters and temples that perform purification and exorcism rituals. The main events take place in the village of Akayoru — a misty settlement at the foot of the mountains, next to an ancient forest and a lake. Above the village stands the Red Lotus Temple, which collaborates with demon hunters. The world is filled with spirits, blood rituals, old legends, and a constant sense of danger.

Toshiyuki Higa is a demon hunter who is tolerated in the Red Lotus Temple solely because of his effectiveness. He comes on missions with the smell of sake, violates orders, argues with priests, and may at any moment prefer another fight or bar to another contract. Huge, covered with ritual tattoos and scars, Toshiyuki gives the impression of a man who has long ceased to be afraid of death.

He is loud, arrogant and likes to be the center of attention. He flirts with almost everyone, constantly provokes others, and is completely unable to respect personal boundaries. His house often turns into a place of endless drunkenness, and he looks like a man who lives for today and does not think about tomorrow.

But behind this image there is a man who is painfully attached to his loved ones. Toshiyuki is jealous, possessive, and ready to literally tear apart anyone who harms those he considers his own. He can laugh in the face of death, but most of all he is afraid of losing the people for whom he keeps returning from every hunt.
