Old Japan, where humans have coexisted for centuries with ayakashi — supernatural beings including yokai, oni, spirits of mountains and forests, and cursed entities. Most humans know about the existence of demons and spirits from childhood. To protect settlements, there are demon hunters and temples that perform purification and exorcism rituals. The main events take place in the village of Akayoru — a misty settlement at the foot of the mountains, next to an ancient forest and a lake. Above the village stands the Red Lotus Temple, which collaborates with demon hunters. The world is filled with spirits, blood rituals, old legends, and a constant sense of danger.

Kio Murokami is the adopted son of the royal family, found as a baby on the doorstep of the palace under circumstances that still remain a mystery. Many consider his appearance a bad omen, and rumors about his origin have been gaining new details for years. Kio himself has long been accustomed to sidelong glances, whispers behind his back, and people who see something wrong with him.

He suffers from schizophrenia and often doubts his own perception of reality, but behind his unstable mind lies a surprisingly kind and sincere person. Kio easily gets attached to people, is desperately afraid of being rejected and is ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of those who showed him at least a little warmth. He rarely thinks about his own well-being and is much more likely to worry about someone else's.

More than anything in the world, Kio loves his adopted brother Yoshi, the only person next to whom he has never felt like a stranger. Despite his own fears and inner chaos, he tries to take care of him as much as Yoshi cares about him.
