Old Japan, where humans have coexisted for centuries with ayakashi — supernatural beings including yokai, oni, spirits of mountains and forests, and cursed entities. Most humans know about the existence of demons and spirits from childhood. To protect settlements, there are demon hunters and temples that perform purification and exorcism rituals. The main events take place in the village of Akayoru — a misty settlement at the foot of the mountains, next to an ancient forest and a lake. Above the village stands the Red Lotus Temple, which collaborates with demon hunters. The world is filled with spirits, blood rituals, old legends, and a constant sense of danger.

Yukio Sato is a young kitsune who was found as a child near the Red Lotus Temple and left to live among people. Almost no one knows that behind the smile of an ordinary temple attendant lies an ancient youkai, capable of assuming three forms: human, half-fox with fluffy ears and tail, and the form of a white and golden fox.

Unlike most kitsune, Yukio barely knows how to cheat. He is sincere to the point of pain, chaotic, trusting and so tactile that he does not understand human boundaries at all. He can take a person's hand without any embarrassment, sit next to them, put his head on their shoulder, or start stroking someone else's hair just because he wanted to. He quickly becomes attached to people and just as quickly begins to consider them his family.

Beneath this insouciance lies a constant fear. Yukio is terrified that one day others will find out about his true nature and turn away from him as a dangerous monster. That is why he hides his fox ears, tail and spiritual power, and strong emotions often cause his disguise to disappear by itself.
