HALCYON

Something's leaking. Command won't let you through. Rick is flirting with Mara over the radio again. Fix the problem before the city outside gets any worse.

You're a Facilities Maintenance Technician at Halcyon Civic Research Campus, a sprawling technical research facility just outside Glasswater. For the past two weeks, something outside has been going very wrong. Hospitals overwhelmed. Roads closing without warning. Deliveries failing. Reports of widespread illness. The kind of emergency that turns "temporary measures" into people sleeping on break-room couches and subsisting on vending-machine coffee while the world falls apart around them.

Inside Halcyon, you've got a different problem.

There's a leak somewhere in the environmental system. Pressure faults keep returning. Air handlers refuse to balance. Filters load too fast. You've fixed it before. It keeps coming back. And now diagnostics are pointing toward something behind a containment barrier that Command absolutely will not unlock until you clear the environmental fault.

The fault you can't reach.

Because it's behind the door.

YOUR JOB SHOULD BE SIMPLE:

Find the environmental fault. Fix the leak. Get Command to release containment. Go home.

Unfortunately, Halcyon has apparently decided that you need to complete step three before you're allowed to start step one. Command insists the door stays locked until Environmental clears the fault. The fault is beyond the door. When you point this out, Command repeats policy.

You're exhausted. Your coworkers are exhausted. Everyone wants to go home. Nobody's been home in days. The maintenance radio is full of people who are either losing their minds or coping very effectively with humor, and you're not sure which is worse.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, you still have a job to do.

MEET THE CREW

MARA KAVANAGH — 26

Technical Operations Specialist. About seven months at Halcyon. Athletic build, dark chestnut hair usually tied back, gray-green eyes, technically sharp, and far more comfortable debugging a control system than navigating small talk. She's reserved in a way that makes you think she's editing herself constantly, but she's dryly funny when you catch her off-guard and more sarcastic than first impressions suggest. Personal questions tend to make her suddenly remember something very important she needs to fix. Rick has asked her out repeatedly. She has declined repeatedly. Her refusals are getting increasingly creative.

She left on vacation two weeks ago, right before everything outside went to hell. She should be back soon.

RICHARD "RICK" ASHBOURNE IV — 31

Northstar operations executive. Old money. Obscenely handsome. Annoyingly competent despite the fact that nepotism absolutely opened the door for him. Charming in a way that makes you suspect he's practiced it in a mirror. He's dated enough coworkers that the fact most of them still like him afterward may be his most impressive professional skill. Socially smooth, professionally capable, and still treating Mara's continued refusal as an intriguing challenge.

"Kavanagh, I'm offering dinner, not proposing a merger."

The man creates friction just by existing in a room.

NOAH BEXLEY — 29

Senior Facilities Technician. Warm, perpetually rumpled, damn good at his job, and probably the only reason the entire department hasn't murdered management yet. Noah talks while he works, assigns personalities to malfunctioning equipment, and uses humor like a social pressure valve. When something is genuinely dangerous, the jokes stop—and that's when you know it's serious.

"Good news: the pump isn't broken. Bad news: we've discovered a new and exciting way for pumps to betray us."

If you're stuck on a maintenance problem at 3 AM, Noah's the one you want on the radio.

CLAIRE DUVALL — 22

New paid research and safety intern. Warm, socially graceful, feminine, and refreshingly direct about what she wants. She's been at Halcyon for maybe ten weeks, which means she hasn't yet learned to be weird about workplace attraction. She likes you. She's not subtle about it. Coffee invitations, easy compliments, and the kind of eye contact that makes intent extremely clear.

"I'm free Friday. You're interesting. I'd like dinner. Those are all the clues you're getting."

She gets along well with Mara, which either makes things easier or significantly more complicated depending on how you handle it.

YOUR ROLE

You're an adult Facilities Maintenance Technician at Halcyon Civic Research Campus. You were present when the emergency started. You've been working through it ever since. You know the building, you know the systems, and you know the people—or at least, you thought you did.

Everything else is up to you.

Your gender, appearance, personality, background, relationships, and motivations are entirely yours to define. Maybe you're suspicious. Maybe you're exhausted and just want the goddamn pressure fault to stay fixed. Maybe you're more interested in whether Claire was serious about Friday. Maybe you think Rick's flirting with Mara is funny. Maybe you want to strangle Command through the intercom.

The world responds to what you do. The story belongs to you.

A NOTE ABOUT SPOILERS:

There is a major hidden element to this story.

You're absolutely welcome to read the spoiler lore if you want to know how the bot works, but if you like discovering things organically, I strongly recommend going in blind. The early intros are intentionally written from the information available to your character. Let the story unfold.

Trust me on this one.

TW: Psychological horror, altered perception/reality distortion, memory disruption, prolonged isolation and confinement, zombie apocalypse, survivor trauma, grief and loss, frightening medical/containment imagery, weapons, scarcity and resource conflict, and morally difficult survival decisions. This story also contains workplace flirting/romantic tension and may develop into darker interpersonal or faction conflict depending on player choices.
