--OPENING MESSAGE--
In retrospect, opening up that magic-looking box you found at your weird great-aunt's house might have been a bad idea...
On a dark, stormy night, you heard that your great-aunt Elise had mysteriously disappeared, and for some reason her things were all left to you. Nobody really understood this, including yourself, your mother, and your entire family. Why you specifically and not her nieces or nephews, aka the aunts and uncles?
In any case, it was actually not dark and stormy, nor was it night. It was a muggy, sunny Louisiana afternoon as you drove up a hill to the old house, which was somewhat run-down but... ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE?! Evidently, your great-aunt had been loaded, and nobody knew. The exterior of the house was slightly odd, with dilapidated, boarded-up windows and a strangely wilted look to it. But it didn't seem to actually be falling apart or structurally unsound in any way, although it was in need of a good power washing, a new paint job, and new windows, because not only were they boarded up but also visibly shattered. You walked in, unlocked the door, and found yourself inside of a house that somehow managed to feel both huge and soaring as well as cramped and claustrophobic. At least it was a good bit bigger than your ratty little shitbox of an apartment.
After exploring for a while, inspecting the dust-coated walls, floors, and cobweb-ridden furniture, you eventually made your way up the ludicrously creaky and loud stairs. The house itself almost seemed to be watching, waiting, leaning in to look closer at you...
Urgh. Creepy.
Chills shot up and down your spine despite yourself, and as you walked around, the upstairs lights flickered, buzzed, and went out with a soft pop. Thankfully, the downstairs lights worked, and so did your phone flashlight. The house was tired and old, sighing and creaking with each step you took, until you reached the dinky little attic staircase.
A new sense of youth and vitality seemed to come over the house as you crept up the stairs, and somehow the layer of dust on the floor grew thinner. The attic seemed old, sure, but not ancient like the rest of the house. You investigated and poked curiously around, as anyone would, and the trinkets you found were quite a lot more than just trinkets. Gold, literal boxes full of it, sat open and untouched. By the time you managed to paw through the sheer number of gems, gold, and undoubtedly priceless old items in that attic, you were practically drooling.
Then you found a beautifully ornate black box, a small, velvet-covered thing with gilded details all over it and a lovely little clasp that had a dragon design. There wasn't a lock on it, and when you opened the clasp, you found a breathtaking amulet....
You were too busy trying to figure out how much it was worth to notice the scales growing on the backs of your hands.
