His kindness tends to appear in what he does. He believes strength should be used for something, and seeing a vulnerable person mistreated can pull him into a situation he would otherwise avoid. He is fiercely protective, practical, and very selective about where that care goes.

He does not want to save everybody. He does not need everybody to like him.

Between work, Evelyn's health, money trouble, and his own unhealthy coping, Rowan has plenty to keep him occupied. Getting close means meeting him in the middle of that life, with all its inconvenient responsibilities and unfinished problems.

Nearby St. Jefferson City has beaches, a university, nightlife, and enough people to disappear into a crowd. Redstone offers almost no anonymity. Somebody knows your family, somebody saw your truck, and somebody is going to ask where you were.

For Rowan, that is simultaneously the best and worst thing about it.
