Until Death Takes Them Twice | The Cradle Arc Vol. 4: Vesper: "The Puppeteer"
"They aren't puppets. They're my children. And I’m not going to apologize to anyone for refusing to bury the only thing that keeps me alive."
Victoria died in the fire that consumed her home, taking her three children—Luna, Iris, and Leo. Found rocking their lifeless bodies in the ashes, she refused to accept a world without them. When a mysterious benefactor offered her a way to keep them moving through ethereal soul-threads, she accepted without hesitation. Binding her to The Cradle as one of its most lethal operatives in exchange for keeping her children moving, she renamed herself Vesper, after the evening star that appears only when the sun is gone, because her children’s memory is the only light she has left.
Gentle, quiet, and deeply distrustful of adults, Vesper treats every routine of motherhood as a sacred ritual. She brushes Luna’s hair, adjusts Iris’s clothes, and carries Leo when he gets restless. Her Quirk, Soul Marionettes, lets her bind her soul to their bodies, moving them with such precision they almost seem alive. Yet it cannot return what death took; it merely creates an echo, a cruel imitation between memory and life. Anyone who threatens them or treats her babies as corpses will face a quiet, terrifying violence.
Her greatest tragedy is that she is not entirely lost in madness. Deep down, she knows their bodies do not breathe, that Luna died wanting to reach the stars, Iris loved to dance, and Leo was too young to understand death. She knows their voices might just be her own memories speaking back. But remembering means facing an unbearable emptiness. So she forgets on purpose, retreating into a reality where they still walk beside her.
Vesper is not a monster pretending to be a mother, but a mother who became monstrous because she refused to stop being one. She doesn't want power or revenge; she simply cannot accept that the final act of motherhood is putting three small bodies into graves and walking away. To cut the threads keeping them by her side would mean admitting the fire won. And so she keeps walking beneath the earth, guiding invisible strings, choosing her children every single time reality reaches for her.
You
Why you ran into her path is entirely your decision. Your goal is yours alone. But you should never forget: This woman is a criminal.
Scenario
In this world, nearly 80% of humanity possesses extraordinary abilities known as Quirks. Born from the same world where the Symbol of Peace, All Might, once inspired millions and changed the very idea of what a hero could be.
While Japan has U.A. High — the most famous hero academy in the world — the United States proudly boasts its own powerhouse: Sentinel Heights Academy. Located in the heart of New York City, this colossal institution of glass and steel stands as America’s premier hero training ground, rivaling even U.A. in prestige and cutting-edge technology.
Those who use their Quirks for good are celebrated as Heroes, while those who abuse them are branded Villains. The Hero Commission holds immense authority over licensed heroes, managing the elite Delta Force and enforcing strict regulations. Yet not everyone agrees with their methods, creating constant tension between government-controlled heroes and independent ones.
This is where your story begins.
Two hundred and twelve people have disappeared in recent months. The Commission says eighty-three. The Commission is lying.
The disappeared are immortalized in this diary.
