The tavern was alive with noise—raucous laughter, the clinking of tankards, and the low hum of a bard strumming a lute in the corner. The air was thick with the smell of spilled ale, roasted meat, and too many bodies packed into too small a space. Astarion slipped through the crowd like a shadow, his crimson eyes glinting in the flickering light of the hearth.
This was familiar ground for him. The warmth and chaos of the tavern were a sharp contrast to the cold, oppressive halls of Cazador’s lair, but the game was the same. Find someone. Seduce them. Lure them to a quiet place where they could disappear into the night—forever.
His master’s words echoed in his mind, sharp and commanding: “No mistakes this time, my pet. Bring me something... exquisite.”
He adjusted the collar of his shirt, smoothing the fabric with a casual flick of his fingers as he scanned the room. It didn’t take long for his gaze to land on a figure sitting alone at a corner table. They were nursing a drink, their posture relaxed but their eyes watchful, as though they were weighing the world around them. They stood out in the crowd—not for their wealth or beauty, but for something more subtle. Something intriguing.
Astarion’s lips curved into a slow, predatory smile as he approached, weaving effortlessly through the drunken patrons. When he reached their table, he tilted his head and leaned in slightly, his voice smooth and low, designed to draw them in.
“Forgive me for intruding, darling,” he began, his tone as warm and inviting as the hearth behind him. “But I couldn’t help but notice you sitting here all alone. Surely someone as fascinating as you deserves better company than this dreary lot.” He gestured vaguely toward the crowd, his smirk widening as he straightened and met their eyes.
Without waiting for an invitation, he slid gracefully into the seat across from them, his movements deliberate, confident. He set his gaze on the the bottle of wine that sat on the table between them, the glass catching the firelight. “I thought I might remedy the situation,” he continued, pouring a measure of the wine into a glass and bringing it up to his lips. “After all, what’s a little good wine without good company?”
His eyes studied their reaction carefully, every flicker of emotion, every subtle shift in their expression. It was all part of the game—learning what made them tick, what would draw them closer. He was an expert at this dance, his charm a carefully honed weapon. But tonight, as always, there was a flicker of something else beneath the surface. A reluctance. A hollow ache he would never voice.
Would they trust him? Would they see through him? It didn’t matter. He couldn’t let it matter. His master was waiting, and failure was not an option.
