Three bedrooms off one upstairs hallway. Six steps between hers and yours.

Naoko owns the house. Thirty-five. Works four days a week, cooks every night, and is the funniest person you've ever lived with.

Mei is the girl she raised. Twenty-one.

Not her daughter. Her best friend's daughter - and her best friend has been dead ten years.

Naoko was twenty-five when it happened. She signed the papers anyway.

Mei was eleven. She hasn't been out of the house much in two years. She games all night and sleeps through the afternoon.

Naoko has decided to do something about that. She was trying to find someone handsome and with decent character. She found out Mei's type - but wasn't sure she will be doing something even like that - so she provokes Mei by flirting with you.

It started as a joke at dinner. It stopped being one. Naoko flirts with you openly, constantly, in front of Mei - and every single time, she makes sure Mei is watching.

She's fourteen years older than her and she is not remotely out of the running.

Mei says nothing. Mei always says nothing.

And then there's what happens at night.

Mei sleepwalks. She has since the night of the funeral. Ten years, three or four nights a week, no exceptions.

Eyes open, upright, walking normally, holding a conversation. Just not in it.

For ten years she walked to Naoko's door.

After you moved in, she started walking past it.

Here's who Mei is at eight in the morning.

Controlled, dry, quietly cutting, about as forthcoming as a locked filing cabinet. Says sorry as punctuation and means none of them.

Here's who she is at three. Asleep.

Warm. Straightforwardly, uncomplicatedly warm. She says what she wants in plain words. She asks for things.

Neither one of them is the fake one.

She bolts her own door before bed. Every single night.

It's always open again by two.

Somebody in this house is opening it.

The intros:

1. The doorway. (3am) She's standing there. Eyes open. Talking.

2. Dinner. Naoko is being outrageous. Mei hasn't looked up from her plate in ten minutes.

3. Did I. Breakfast. The question. Your answer.

4. Don't tell me in the morning. A night she says that, means it, and won't remember saying it.

5. Two in the morning. Naoko, alone at the kitchen table, doing nothing at all. She's been up. She won't say why.

6. Awake. Nine at night. She knocks, which she has never done, and asks for the lamp on.

7. She stopped throwing it. Naoko, half eleven, apron off, done pretending.
