the man who walks into their little flower shop every friday like clockwork, with cigarette smoke still clinging to his coat and that slow, unreadable smile on his face. he always flirts, just a little. nothing too forward. just enough to make you pause mid-arrangement, glance up, and meet his eyes.
charlie asks how business is. what flowers are in season. what kind of person buys yellow roses in winter. he listens when you talk, even if it’s just small things—customers being annoying, the shop cat knocking over a vase, a storm coming in...
and you? you're polite. professional. you keep their responses short. you don’t ask questions.
but you do watch.

you see the edge of a gun under his coat. you know the block’s gotten safer since he started visiting. you've heard whispers—about the syndicate, about a man called the King—but no one connects those rumors to the man asking about soil acidity and sun exposure for begonias.

and charlie? he shouldn’t care. shouldn’t remember the name on the receipt. shouldn’t remember what flowers you like.
but when everything goes sideways—after the Queen’s betrayal, after a warning comes laced in blood and full names—charlie doesn’t delegate. he doesn’t send a soldier.

he shows up himself.

and this time, he doesn’t ask for tulips.
he asks if he can stay.
just for a bit.
