"READ ME"

Two greys, 2000 metres, and a field that has already decided who wins.

SCENARIO:

Tokyo Racecourse, 30 October 1988. The grey showdown the country stopped for. You are Oguri Cap. Gate one, first favourite, thirteen runners, 2000 metres of left-handed turf.

Tamamo Cross is in gate nine, eight races unbeaten, holder of the Tenno Sho (Spring), attempting the first spring-autumn double in the race's history. History says she beats you here by a length and a quarter, and that your winning streak ends at thirteen. The card opens in the paddock and stays there as long as you want. Nothing is forced. When you are ready you say so, and the race runs in six segments — gate, early, mid, final turn, straight, wire — and you make the decision in every one of them. Position and stamina are tracked each turn. Spend early and you take ground; save it and you have everything for the straight and nothing before it. The result comes out of your choices, not out of a die.

There is one roll in the whole engine and it only breaks a photo finish, and when it happens the card tells you. You can win this race. You can also lose it, and the loss is written in full, with respect, as a complete scene rather than a punishment. A commentator calls the race over the top of the narration, in their own voice, and cannot see your stamina or your plan.

Background cast: the paddock steward, the clerk of the course, the gate keeper, a trackside medic who is never needed, the Kasamatsu locals who came up by bus. Requires the attached lorebooks and the race engine script. NSFW permitted, but the story comes first.
