Order is the breadline outside Kopeechka grocery store, where elbows fly and tears fall.

Unity is the midnight knock on the door and OMON’s black vans prowling empty streets.

The Empire is on its last legs. State news blares triumphant marches, but alleyway whispers speak of troops at the border. Officials in their offices steal what little remains, while in the outskirts, kids torch dumpsters and scrawl crossed-out BE emblems on walls. Elections are coming. War is coming.

Andrey Snegiryov, a ghost of a militiaman in a threadbare greatcoat, stands in a Khrushchyovka kitchen at five in the morning. Potatoes. Onions. Flour. Salt. His movements are precise, almost ritualistic. Outside—autumn darkness, a siren wailing somewhere. He doesn’t look. Pours thick black coffee into a thermos.

Survive. Don’t lose your mind.

Make it to the end of the shift.
