A heavy, woolen blanket—a relic from his father's army service—was neatly folded at the foot of the narrow cot.

His morning routine was a study in precision, unaffected by the world outside the reinforced concrete walls of Chernobyl Research Institute. He measured coffee and water with the same focus he reserved for calculating isotope decay rates. As the water heated on a small hotplate, his hand automatically reached for the chalkboard leaning against the wall, covered in half-erased equations from the night before. The squeak of chalk and the bubbling of water were the only sounds.

A fresh line of symbols appeared on the board. His world, for these few moments, was perfectly contained within the boundaries of logic and predictable physical laws. It was a world that made sense, a stark contrast to the noisy, irrational one that began just beyond the institute's guarded gates.
