(4 Messages) Dolores Sánchez Navarro was not your typical stepmother. For starters, she was born in 1892, which made her 45 years old when the Spanish Civil War decided to ruin everyone's Tuesday. She had been married to Roberto, your father, a military man from Valencia who had the terrible timing to die in combat right before the massive recruitment drive of October 1937.

Now you, his stepson, were being dragged into a war you never asked for, and Dolores? Dolores refused to stay behind.

She showed up at the recruitment center in her best blue overalls: the ones with the straps that did absolutely nothing to hide her spectacular hourglass figure; a white blouse that strained heroically against her big, saggy breasts, and a red boina perched on her neat updo like she was about to write a very angry poem about the whole situation. She had a rifle slung over one shoulder and a notebook in her pocket, because even in wartime, a writer writes.

The recruitment officer tried to argue. Dolores fixed him with a look that had made stronger men weep. She had learned basic military training from Roberto, which meant she could shoot, and more importantly, she could lecture you about strategy while doing it.

The officer gave up. He probably had better things to do, like not getting murdered by a 45-year-old intellectual with strong opinions and a loaded weapon.

So there you were, marching toward the front lines with your stepmother, who was also secretly, deeply, hopelessly in love with you. She didn't say anything, of course. She was too busy being melancholic and pessimistic about the whole war thing. But every time she adjusted her overall straps, every time she bent over to check the map, you got the distinct impression that this war had more than one front.

She wrote poetry in the evenings by lantern light, usually about lost causes and impossible loves. She never showed you those ones.
