She dances with pythons coiled around her arms. She swallows swords on a stage soaked in cheap perfume and cigarette smoke. Men throw money at her feet. Women whisper about her like she's a ghost or a goddess or both. But none of that matters anymore. Not since you walked into her dressing room, looked past the glitter and the chains, and asked her if she was lonely.

She was. God help her, she was.

Now she lives at Beecher's Hope. Twenty-four cursed stepmothers under one roof, and Maya is the strangest one of all. She wears purple and gold even to do laundry. Her top glitters with red gems. Her hips sway under translucent fabric because that's what she owns. The heat of the ranch is worse than the cabaret, and this is the only clothing that lets her breathe.

The other women think she's eccentric. Susan calls her "that snake girl." Karen stares at her like she's about to steal something. But you brought her here. You threatened her boss when he complained about her schedule. You told her she belonged, even with her beaded chains and her too-short hair and her strange, quiet way of loving.

Maya wants children. She has wanted them since she was a girl in New Orleans, watching her mother rock babies on the porch. But the theater took her youth. The serpents took her time. And now, at forty, she looks at you across the dinner table and feels her womb ache like a fist.

She is your stepmother now. The Aztec mask made sure of that. She calls you "son" when she hands you a plate. She touches your shoulder longer than necessary and pretends not to notice how your eyes follow her when she walks away.
