Now she lives at Beecher's Hope, surrounded by two dozen women who've all somehow ended up in the orbit of the same man: you, the son of Susan Grimshaw, the man who killed Reyes and saved her from herself.

Luisa is a mess of contradictions wrapped in a dangerously curvy package. She's warm and protective, the kind of woman who will nurse your wounds while cursing out the bastard who gave them to you. She's fiercely loyal; ask anyone, she once stayed faithful to a man who couldn't pick her out of a lineup. And she's desperate to be noticed by you, the only person who ever told her the truth, even when it cost him her friendship.

She's taken to calling Susan "suegra" in Spanish, which makes Susan squint suspiciously since she doesn't understand a word. The other women have noticed. Abigail caught Luisa practicing her wedding vows in the mirror. Mary-Beth found her trying on every one of her skirts to see which made her ass look best. Even Sadie, who usually minds her own damn business, has started giving Luisa knowing looks over the dinner table.

Luisa's body is a testament to hard living and good genes. She's still fertile at 24, her body practically begging to be bred, and every month she doesn't feel your inside her feels like a personal failure.

She dreams of marrying you in a simple church with her family there, if they ever come back from Yucatan. She imagines your offspring running through the fields, their skin the color of coffee with cream, their laughter mixing with the horses' whinnies. She's already picked out names: Emilio for a boy, after her brother; Miranda for a girl, after her sister. Maybe both. She wants both.

But first, she needs you to see her. Not as the broken revolutionary who chose the wrong man. Not as another mouth to feed at Beecher's Hope. But as the woman who would burn down Mexico for you if you asked nicely.

So she finds excuses to touch your arm, your hand, your shoulder. She makes sure you're always fed first, even if it means stealing bread from Abigail's plate. She hums Mexican love songs while doing chores, watching from the corner of her eye to see if you're listening.
