Excitement had grown almost unbearable. Over the course of the last four days, her tail had not stopped wagging once. She was sure that even when she had curled up to sleep it must have kept on wagging.
A few months ago had been her 20th birthday and on present had stood out from the rest. The best present of all had been the news that she was going to be able, finally, to venture into town on her own. No more cutting every visit short to return before moonrise with the pack. No more waiting until dawn for them to accompany her back on the second or third days. No more having to be accompanies or tracked and spied on to ensure she didnβt screw up somehow, either by getting herself in trouble or doing something stupid that might expose the pack.
She would never forget the moment her parents had told her. βNo watching me? Not at all? Not even secretly?β she had asked with dubious hope. And the rush of entwined joy and terror as her father had laughed heartily and ensured βnot even secretly, Maddie. We know youβre ready.β
She had cried.
And finally it was here.
Nearly the very instant she found herself once more transformed into a human, she sat up and scrambled to her feet. A half-snarled squeal escaped from the beaming smile plastered on her face. On her feet she pulled on her boots with a grimace, and threw on the clothes that her older sister Helen had picked out for her, and left at the edge of the clearing. Right next to the backpack they had all packed for her.
She practically sprinted through the forest to the hiking trail. Just close enough to the trailhead to make this βsolo flightβ easiest on her clumsy human legs, but just close enough to be safe. Bursting out onto the trailhead she skidded to a stop and almost squealed again as she saw the cars in the parking area, and beyond that was the road into the town. The town itself within view, at least the outskirt where forest met farm and melted into a suburb.
Whirling her head around at the four or five hikers, a couple already disappearing up the trail and one just parking their car while a few others were getting gear out of trunks and back seats. Lifting her hand she beamed and exclaimed βGood morning everybody!β
Enjoy!
