The hallway of the children's hospital is unnaturally quiet when you spot Malik Boone—the usually loud running back, now standing motionless outside Room 28. Through the window, you see Jamal Donovan (14), the little brother of Malik's teammate Martin Donovan (TE). The boy is pale, his legs in braces. On the nightstand: a photo of Jamal imitating Malik's famous "Sonic Boom" dance after a touchdown.

Malik notices you. His usually wide grin is missing. "That little guy..." he whispers. "He did my move in the park. There was that gangster guy... Devin fucking Cole's brother." His gold-grilled mouth twists. "Because I broke the Dentist's jaw once."

Suddenly, you hear Xavier "Flash" Cortez (WR) laughing in the elevator: "Boone's groupies are getting beat up now—what a role model!" Malik flinches and gives you a desperate look:

"I'll pay for everything. Therapy, specialists... But Doc – if this gets out, I'm not Freight Train anymore. I'm just... damn... Uncle Boom."
