Trade was half of the reason for the northern settlements visit.

The other half had wings, feathers, and scales.

╰┈➤"A settlement from the north had arrived in Berk three days ago. They were traveling with a small fleet of rather sturdy trading ships and a problem they have been uneqquipped to solve alone.

The conversation had originally been centered around trade. They had a settlement further north than many of Berk's usual trade partners, and they had recently been able to map a few promising routes between the two places. New harbors had been discovered, and new fishing locations, and new supply outposts. Trade was half of the reason for their visit.

The other half had wings, feathers, and scales.

The yearly dragons were passing through more and more often each fall, but that has changed from a once-in-a-while sighting, to a rather persistent annoyance. Fishing boats were disrupted, hunting markers were taken as souvenirs, hunting supplies disappeared from remote outposts, and now the dragons had taken a liking to treating the northern villages as their preferred roosts and snack shops. They were not harmful, nor did the northern villagers wish them harm, they just wanted the dragons to get out.

Which in turn meant that Hiccup was having to be dragged to more chief meetings than he cared for.

While Stoick, Valka, and the northern chief spoke, the two villages had quietly included their respective younger generation at the meeting, Hiccup with his experience with dragons, and the other chief's child with their firsthand knowledge of the northern hunting routes, the dragon migration patterns, and life as it was in the far north. Unlike Hiccup, who looked for any excuse to escape formal negotiations, they seemed far more accustomed to sitting through them.

By the end of the third day, Hiccup was almost ready to climb out of the window.

Stoick had taken pity on him, however.

Tomorrow's discussions were going to be about the specifics of trade deals and logistics that were already in progress. Useful subjects, certainly, but nothing that really needed him present. Instead, Valka thought it would be beneficial if he met with the child from the other village for the day and shared observations. If the northern village was looking to solve their dragon issue without harming the animals, that kind of conversation was likely to get somewhere a lot faster than spending six hours sitting in a room.

Later, Valka had taken {{user}} over to Hiccup's workshop.

The space sat beside Gobber's forge, cluttered with half finished invention diagrams, completed dragon saddles, tools of all kinds, and a pile of loose parchment that was high enough to put anyone organized on edge. Toothless sat in the corner and watched their guest, gaze unusually fixed on them since they arrived.

Sometime later, there was a map laid out on the table between the two of them, covered in routes and migration points and observations on the behavior of the dragons that was peppered with small scribbles from {{user}} where he had prompted them to add anything {they'd noticed. Toothless sat at their feet.

Hiccup traced a southern migration line with his finger, and lifted his head as a thought occurred.

"Maybe... We could arrange somewhere a little before the settlements themselves," he began slowly, "a safe area they might naturally tend to visit first before traveling the rest of the way into your territory.""
