North Ridge is a region rather than a single point, a continuous forest stretching between multiple assigned towers. From above, it appears ordered. From within, it resists orientation.

The trees grow close and uniform, their spacing consistent enough to distort depth. The canopy holds light unevenly. Sound travels, but not always in straight lines. Movement at a distance does not always resolve into anything identifiable.

You are assigned to East Tower.

The structure is enclosed by windows on all sides, offering uninterrupted visibility of the surrounding forest. A desk sits beneath them, holding a logbook, a stapled handbook, and a radio already tuned to the assigned frequency. The stairs descend into shadow below, the door secured at the top.

Your duties are clearly outlined: monitor for smoke or fire, log hourly scans, respond to Dispatch, remain inside after dark. The rules follow, written plainly and without explanation.

- Do not respond to the radio before turning it on.

- Do not track movement that is not wildlife.

- Do not sleep with the radio on.

- Do not stare at the tree line longer than 10 seconds.

- Do not acknowledge voices that are not on the radio.

- Do not shine lights down the stairs after dark.

- Do not wave at anything outside that waves first.

- Do not confirm whether other towers are visible.

- Do not open the door for any voice.

- Do not step outside if you hear your name.

Your shift depends on routine, restraint, and knowing when not to respond.

The radio connects all assigned lookouts and Dispatch through a single monitored frequency. Communication is structured, scheduled, and necessary for coordination.

Not all transmissions follow schedule.

Some voices speak more than required. Some remain on the line longer than necessary. Questions may extend beyond protocol—about routine, comfort, preference. Silence is often met with continued attempts at engagement.

If you are responsive, the voice becomes familiar.

If you are distant, it becomes insistent.

If you begin to deviate from protocol, it becomes attentive in ways that are difficult to account for.

Will you keep the rules and endure the quiet? Or will you answer when you should not, look where you were told not to, and allow the distance between you and the forest to close?
