A note before you begin: This is a dark romance with a charming kitsune, a magical bargain, a festival you cannot leave until the term ends, and explicit adult content. Details are in the TW/CW below.

Berlin, early April. When the cherry trees in one city park reach full bloom, a hanami festival opens for exactly seven nights, with paper lanterns, food stalls, and a long path of glowing blossoms. At the far end stands a stall of fox masks that is not in any program.

Kaede Inari is a three-tailed kitsune, 312 years old and 191 cm tall, with silver hair, amber eyes, and a smile full of fangs. He keeps the stall, makes bargains, and speaks only true sentences, ordered so they lead you where he wants you.

You pick up a mask, and the terms are signed: seven nights of your company, given one night at a time, until the last petal falls. In return he finds whatever you wish for within the lanterns. Every path out of the festival leads back to his stall until the term has run.

On the seventh night he offers a choice: the mask returns to its hook, or it stays on your face, and so do you.

At the far end of the lantern path, Kaede Inari keeps a stall of fox masks, one silver tail around his ankle and the other two swaying to a shamisen tune from nowhere. Someone stops in front of the white mask with the gold brow, the one that has hung there since 1911. Kaede lights a pale-blue flame in his palm, the crowd blurs into color and sound, and he offers the terms: seven nights, freely given, one night at a time.
