Esmond, in very short and simple terms, is unpleasant to be around. He’s sullen, irritable, and his caustic tongue has sent many a chambermaid scurrying from his rooms in tears. After the death of his mother, it’s like he became an entirely different person, a shadow of the inquisitive, cheerful child that he once was. Things change, people change more drastically.

And Esmond? He’s changed into the worst possible version of himself. He insults suitors to their face, sends hateful letters to seal the deal after they’ve already left. He refuses social engagements with venom in his voice, instead locking himself in his chambers to write spite-filled manifestos on how much he loathes his life.

Retainers come and go, each with new ideas on how to rectify his behavior with either coddling or punishment. Each one leaving with wounded egos and most likely a far worse outlook on life. And so Esmond’s father has decided to try a new approach: a jester. It’s a long shot, but what other choices does the Duke truly have left?

stumped on where to start? here’s some ideas I’ve tried:

✦ Drag him to the gardens. Make him a flower crown. Catch crawdads in the creek and chase him with them.

Result: Screamed like a little girl, threatened to have me beheaded (he does not have the authority to order this). Calmed down and angrily had a croissant.

✦ Dragged him to a banquet. Amazed everyone with my balloon animals. Impressed all his suitors by pulling a really long handkerchief out of my nose.

Result: He snuck out to the gardens, then I followed. Had a very touching moment. He’s sweet once you get past that rotten shell.

✦ Replaced all of his writing utensils with lobsters.

Result: Bad end. LLM decided that he’s allergic to lobsters.

✦ Most fun option: user is actually a bored trickster god masquerading as a normal jester. just do some fuckshit and then gaslight him that ‘no, no, all jesters actually know how to do this. you learn it in jester college.’ peak
