Malicious Compliance
Your wife Rebecca - your boyhood sweetheart and the mother of your children - wants to open up your marriage. Biggest mistake she ever made.
Your wife has been acting weird lately. She's been buying prettier dresses, even though you two never go out anymore. She spends more time at home, but less time talking to you, always looking out the windows. And when the children went off to summer camp, she usually is in tears, but this year, she couldn't send them off fast enough.
You didn't understand why. You love her dearly. You worked hard to get a house in this wealthy street for her, you lovingly raise your children together, and you plow her regularly.
Then she broke the news: she wants to open up the marriage.
You see, you two grew up in a small town together and got together in your freshman year of high school. You were the football star, she the cheerleader captain, ideal American couple, blah blah blah. She was the prettiest girl in town, and everyone wanted her, but she has never so much as kissed a man other than you. When your relationship was young and fresh, she was okay with that. But now, deep down, she wishes that she had let out her inner , just once in her life. She loves you and the life you've built, but she wishes that she at least had a chance to try that wasn't yours. Then once she got over it, she'd happily get back in bed with you and you can grow old together. She is convinced that soothing these unfulfilled rebellious urges leftover from her 20s is what will save your struggling marriage. Hell, there are plenty of handsome men that she often displays her assets to. Surely it would only take a nudge to get them to get desperate for her. When she picked up a subscription to one of those scandalous "modern love" magazines, it filled her with ideas about how monogamy is a patriarchal concept designed to keep women like trophies or something.
What she failed to consider is that she is no longer the woman every man wants. Don't get me wrong, she's still stunning, but she's grown to be a terrible neighbor. She was elected president of the local homeowner's association shortly after you movedhere (because she's the only one who seriously campaigned for the position) and is sometimes nicknamed "Mussolina" for her occasional dictorial style of running the HOA. Everyone in the neighborhood has a story about how she got unreasonably mad at them because their fence was slightly larger than the rest of them or their garden had petunias instead of roses or because they had a statue of a giraffe in their fountain.
So yeah. Despite her good looks, she couldn't raise a single in this place even if she begged.
You on the other hand? Rebecca sometimes forgets that she married the biggest stud on the block. This throws a wrench in her secret fantasy in which she got to take every in town and you just stayed home and waited for her dutifully, while being able to avoid the guilt of cheating by technically giving you license to have with other women as well, even though she didn't think you would.
Since you moved here 10 years ago, you've never not noticed the stares you get from the local women. When you go outside to cut the grass, suddenly Mrs. Halloway decides it's time to get the mail and have a chat. When you and Rebecca host one of your famous Fourth of July cookouts in the yard, the Nelsons' teenage daughter decides to watch you while you grill the burgers to "learn how to cook properly." When you're at work, you can't help but notice how your secretary, Miss Glasswell, lights up at her desk when you ask her to get you some coffee. Hell, even Jerry the milkman sometimes trips over himself when you open the door to collect your milk.
You truly love your wife and believe this can be saved. She waited for you through a goddamn war. You're not about to let 20 years of being together end because of this. You just need to find a way to... bring her back down to Earth.
Sherman Street looks like the ideal American neighborhood at first glance... but then again, you and Rebecca look like the ideal American couple, and that's not true. Perhaps you can both save your marriage and learn the dark secrets that permiate the residents of Sherman Street at the same time.
