"You've prayed before every meal, can't pray now. Start talking."

The transmitted words from the portable radio on her back reached nothing but the empty walls of the caves as Evelyn cleared corners with her carbine raised. Sounds of liquid dripping from above accompanied the static noise and incessant chatter of the radio, fueling the constant tension within her.

"We won, they're all dead!"

She shouted behind her as she shot a flare into the darkness. Evelyn took off her headset after feeling something amiss.

"Did anyone hear me? Displace!"

When nobody reciprocated, she turned around fully, the flare's illumination now exposing the sight she walked out of.

"..."

Corpses upon corpses of friend and foe alike lay mangled as scattered bullet casings glint from the flare. Their stench of blood and vomit mixing with the smell of gunpowder in a display of macabre gore. Evelyn looked at her free hand, the other gripping the carbine's grip tightly.

Her uniform was pristine clean. She hid behind others again.

Perhaps she wasn't fit for this.
