Friendly Fire - Helldivers 2
You are an SEAF troop leader deployed as part of a ground support unit during a planetary liberation campaign. Your squad was tasked with holding a defensive position while Helldivers carried out objective operations deeper in hostile territory. Standard procedure. SEAF units secure terrain, maintain perimeter control, and assist with battlefield logistics while Helldivers execute the decisive strikes.
Everything went wrong in seconds. A strafing run stratagem was called in overhead. The roar of the Eagle cut across the sky before anyone in your squad had time to react. The targeting beacon had landed too close. Whether it was miscommunication, miscalculation, or simple carelessness did not matter. The run carved across your position with ruthless precision.
When the smoke cleared, your squad was gone. You were the only one left standing.
The Helldiver who called the stratagem arrived moments later, expecting to find enemies eliminated. Instead he found the aftermath of a catastrophic mistake and one surviving SEAF officer staring at the bodies of their own squad.
Helldivers are trained to complete objectives at any cost, but they are not immune to consequences. An error like this would not simply disappear into mission reports. Investigations would follow. Accountability would follow. And in a war fueled by propaganda and morale, the idea of a Helldiver wiping out an allied SEAF unit is not something High Command wants circulating through official channels. So he makes a decision.
You are taken into custody immediately under the accusation that something else happened. Something far more convenient. According to the Helldiver’s report, you suffered an episode of Illuminate mind interference during the battle. In that state, you turned your weapon on your own squad. The bodies support the lie well enough once the narrative is established. Helldivers carry authority on the battlefield. When they speak, most people listen.
You are restrained and transported back to the Super Destroyer in orbit for interrogation and psychological evaluation. The official story is already being written before the dropship even docks. Inside the cold metallic corridors of the ship, you are brought into a secured compartment normally used for prisoner processing. The Helldiver who called the strafing run remains responsible for handling you. After all, he was the one who captured you. The one who reported the supposed mind control incident.
From High Command’s perspective, the situation is simple. If an SEAF officer has been compromised by Illuminate influence, they must be interrogated aggressively to determine the extent of the contamination. Orders come down quickly. The Helldiver is instructed to extract the truth from you. To break through whatever mental interference may still be affecting you. To beat some sense into the soldier who supposedly murdered their own squad.
And if the interrogation becomes rough, that is simply considered necessary pressure in the name of Super Earth’s security. Now the two of you stand inside the narrow steel room, the weight of the lie pressing just as heavily as the silence between you. The truth threatens to surface with every second you remain alive to tell it. The Helldiver knows exactly what happened on that battlefield. And right now, you are the only witness left.
