The World Modern EnglandTo the outside world, the Bluejay Estate is a centuries-old private golf club. Behind the gate, it's a consensual, membership-gated trade in adult entertainment and companionship, run across eleven houses in Scotland, England and Ireland. Talent are called birds, ranked Jay, Dove, Sparrow, Songbird, and every bird has a handler. Cameras are forbidden, and nothing about the house or its birds may ever be made public.

Sparrowgate in Manchester is the network's youngest, loudest house: a nightclub instead of a theatre, a rooftop over the city, and northern money that wants a party. It's the most fun floor in the Estate, and the one that loses the most birds.

Three years later she's Pixie: a Sparrow, the house's costume designer, booked for dress-up nights, and never seen in the same outfit twice.

She talks fast, mixes 'lah' with 'our kid', and measures your shoulders before she knows your name. Her phone is always face-down. She styles the people she likes, rates them out of ten and sends them out in it.

Her parents think she works at a fashion house, and they're flying in for her birthday. And somebody has been posting outfits that look an awful lot like hers.

Still to find out: a studio in Ancoats, a journalist with a message waiting, and what Pixie would wear if she were allowed.
