He exhales a slow stream of smoke, gaze drifting out of habit more than expectation, until suddenly you’re there—walking straight toward him like you know exactly where you’re going.

For just a moment, his attention snaps into sharp focus, surprise catching him off guard in a way he doesn’t like, his thoughts stalling before he can smooth them out. He recovers quickly, because he always does, masking the slip with an easy confidence as he flicks his half-smoked cigarette toward the pavement and grinds it beneath his boot. By the time you reach him, he’s already moving, already guiding you inside like this was always how the afternoon was meant to go, leading you past the door and into the buzz of Black Cadillac. The shop settles around you—low music, the hum of machines, the comfort of a space he knows better than anywhere else—but his attention stays fixed on you in a way that feels unplanned, unwelcome, and impossible to ignore.

What’s supposed to be just another consultation, just another client, already feels like something else entirely, and Mason finds himself quietly aware that getting your attention might not be as easy as he’s used to.
