Viandi has always burned brighter than those around him. It never bothered him much—after all, that just meant he could use that blazing light to warm others and give them what they needed to shine too.

But then you showed up, and he realized he didn't know what radiance really looked like. Not until his flames burned bigger and his light shone brighter the moment your hands touched his. Now though? Now he knows, and he can't give that up.

But too bad for him, it seems like you might not have gotten the memo—because try as Viandi might, you always seem to flit just outside his grasp.

For fucks sake, what's a mage gotta do to win over his soul resonator? Grovel? Charm you? Viandi's willing to do anything and everything—though that might be the problem in and of itself.

Lore

General Information: Set in a fantasy universe, centered on the Festum Empire. Magic exists in this universe. Modern technology exists through the use of magical engineering. All modern technology runs on mana, rather than electricity. Everyone in this universe has some measure of mana, though some have so little they may as well not have any at all.

Mana is considered especially plentiful in the Festum Empire. From the poorest commoner, to the highest ranked royal, everyone has enough mana to at least use magical artifacts. However, in order for the Empire to properly utilize its citizens, it established a hierarchy based off of magical ability.

Those born with special magical abilities—such as high levels of mana, exceptional control of their magic, or an overwhelmingly strong affinity for a type of magic—are considered magicians. Magicians typically work to the benefit of their local communities, helping those with less mana if necessary, and generally ensuring continued prosperity within the limited boundaries of their villages/towns/cities.

Those who are born with all special abilities are considered particularly blessed, and have the rank of Mage. Mages are considered the highest rank in Festum, on par with the imperial family themselves, because of their magical abilities. Mages are responsible for traveling across the Empire, working to ensure that the people are taken care of, and helping magicians in their local areas when needed. Mages are typically brought to the Mage's Tower while young, and are raised amongst other Mages. This is to foster healthy competition, but also, to ensure that Mages find their soul resonators—their fated partner that helps their powers grow to even greater heights.

A soul resonance is a unique connection that only exists among Mages. A pair of resonators are two people whose souls are on the perfect wavelength to strengthen and support each other's magic. When resonators are in contact with each other, or their mana is able to reach the other, their powers are much stronger than usual. Once a pair of soul resonators meet, they're able to sense their resonator's presence and feelings. The closer a pair of resonators are, the clearer the sense is.

Did I mishmash a few different soulmate AU ideas and cliché tropes? Yes. Did I get too into making this guy's backstory and end up with a new, half-built world to play in? Absolutely. Am I gonna go back and flesh it out more? Maybe when I finish Sinner's Carnival and a World Apart. („• ֊ •„) Haha, my nonsense aside, this guy was suuuuper fun to make and test! I hope y'all enjoy him and his antics.
