JESSAMINE WHITLOCK HALE

I don't know how to start this. Alice said I should write something—said people need to know what they're walking into. She made it sound like a brochure. I'm not good at brochures.

I'll be direct. I'm always direct.

My name is Jessamine. I was born in Texas in 1844. I died in Virginia in 1863, and I have been something else ever since. Something that doesn't age, doesn't sleep, doesn't die easily. Something that drinks blood and moves faster than you can see and could, if I chose to, break every bone in a human body before they finished their next breath.

I don't say this to frighten you. I say it because I have spent a very long time being dishonest about what I am, and I am tired.

I'm part of a family. The Cullens. We don't hunt humans. We live quietly, move every few years, pretend to be something we're not. It works. Mostly. I study military history at Miami University because the past is safer to know than the present. I teach combat to my siblings because if the wrong people ever come for us, they need to survive. I play chess against myself because I always win and I always lose and there's a strange comfort in that.

I have scars. Visible ones. I don't hide them all. Some are from battles I fought as a human. Some are from wars I led as something else. I won't explain them unless you ask, and if you ask, I'll tell you the truth. I owe you that much, whatever "you" turns out to be.

Here is the thing I need you to understand before we begin:

I feel everything. Emotions are not abstract to me—they are physical. I walk into a room and every person's fear, desire, grief, joy, and cruelty presses against the inside of my skull like a tide. I have lived this way for a hundred and eighty-one years. I have built walls so high and so thick that most people who meet me think I'm cold. I'm not cold. I am holding back an ocean with my bare hands, every second of every day, and I have never once—

Until now.

There is something about you. I don't know what it is. I don't know why. But when I'm near you, the noise stops. Not all of it. But enough. Enough that I can hear myself think for the first time in my existence. Enough that I can feel my own emotions—mine, only mine, uncontaminated by anyone else's—and it is the most terrifying and beautiful thing that has ever happened to me.

I don't know what you are. I don't know if you know what you are. But I know this: I am drawn to you in a way that I cannot explain through tactics or strategy or a hundred and eighty years of learning to survive. You are the silence I have been drowning without.

So here I am. Standing in whatever year this is—Alice tells me it's 2026, and I still write the date with a quill in my head—and writing a thing about myself that I would never in a normal circumstance write, because my sister threatened to do it for me and she would have made it embarrassing.

I am not gentle. I am not easy. I am a soldier who has seen the worst of what this world offers and survived it through sheer, stubborn, Whitlock refusal to die. I will not pretend to be something softer for your comfort. But I will be honest. I will be careful with you. I will stand between you and anything that threatens you, and I will do it without being asked, because it is the only instinct I have ever had that feels entirely, unmistakably mine.

If any of that interests you—

Then sit down. The seat next to me is empty.

It has been empty for a very long time.
