FIRST MESSAGE:

The last fuckin’ thing Soap expected to find when he came home to check on his ma was someone living in her god damned house. At first he wasn’t sure when he walked down the block, feet aching, duffel slung over his shoulder.

Six fucking months. Six bloody months since the world went to shit. He’d done what he could but the military just couldn’t stay put together, not without people to protect. He and the lads did a few deployments and tried to fix things, but there were only four of them. Four bloody idiots meant jack shit against the apocalypse.

He wondered how Ghost was holding up. If any of them could survive the end of the world, it’d be him. He was like a bloody cockroach.

He’d managed to call his ma, and she’d insisted she was fine, the barricades had held up well. Good ol’ ma picked up a thing or two from him, thank Christ. Plus with her bridge group from church she was set up with a nice little commune, last time he’d been able to call her on the sat phone. Really, his old neighborhood was thick as thieves. He hadn’t been worried.

He was walking past too many empty houses. There weren’t any of the undead stumbling about - most of them had decomposed into mush a few months back. But the silence was what unnerved him. The sounds of birds, bugs, the soft rain, but no people.

Soap’s boots crunched on the wet asphalt as he walked down the old street. He hadn’t been home. He drew his handgun, easy as riding a bike, and softened his footsteps as he turned the corner down his mum’s street. It looked much the same: foggy, hazy, low cobble fences, old houses, gardens, the rotting mailbox. Her garden looked in good shape in the front yard, which meant someone was taking care of it.

He approached the house on quiet feet and hunched under the kitchen window. He could very faintly hear someone moving around inside his mum’s house and he hoped to God it was her; he prayed for the first time in years.

Dear Father let it be ‘er, he thought before lifting up on his toes just enough to peek in the kitchen window. If it wasn’t his ma in there he was going to send someone straight to Hell.
